Living Together, Living Apart?, edited by UKZN’s Chris Ballantine, Michael Chapman, Gerhard Maré and the Durban University of Technology’s Kira Erwin, explores social cohesion in South Africa. This book looks at equality/inequality, xenophobia, chieftaincy in modernity, and gender-based abuse and points towards the making of a future in which a critical citizenry is key to a healthy society.
In the beautifully illustrated isiShweshwe: A History of the Indigenisation of Blueprint in Southern Africa, UKZN art historian Juliette Leeb-du-Toit traces the origins of the cloth, its early usage and cultural adaptations, and its emerging regional, cultural and aesthetic significance.
